Uncle Jim and his Northern Ramblers
I was the fiddle player who won the ACT (Associated Canadian Travellers)
amature hour in The Pas with Ray Lichowit on the guitar in 1947 or 48;
sponsored by the Elks club.
I was eleven years old and had just come to The Pas from Pikwitonei. It
seems as if I was always being invited to play somewhere from then on.
When I got Alex Samborski on the piano and Max Lebowicki on the guitar I
had the core group to make a band. Some of the other musicians that played a
various times were Lloyd Sayese, Maurice Powell and Willy Chartrand would sing.
He had a great voice. We were called "Uncle Jim and his Northern
Ramblers". We played as many as three nights a week at weddings, railroader's
dances, Concerts and some nights because people just wanted to dance. This
continued until I went to Winnipeg in 1956. It was a fun time for all.
